Increase in support for hard-pressed customers

In the year ahead water companies will provide a package of measures worth more than £40 million to support customers who are struggling to pay or in debt.

Companies aim to tailor their support to customers' needs as much as possible and to offer a wide range of help, for example through trust funds, debt matching and write-off schemes, debt advice and water efficiency measures to help customers on meters reduce their bills.

For 14 of the 18 water companies social tariffs will be available to reduce customer bills. The other four companies intend to have social tariffs in place in 2016 or are already consulting their customers about a tariff scheme.
