England enjoys high-quality bathing waters during scorching summer

Defra has announced that 97.9% of bathing waters in England met the tough standards for water quality in 2018. 92.4% of beaches achieved the top 'excellent' or 'good' ratings.

These figures are in stark contrast to the early 1990s, when less than a third of bathing waters would have met today’s standards.

Commenting on the new bathing water quality figures, a Water UK spokesperson said:

“As an industry we’re committed to the highest environmental standards, and the excellent results on bathing water quality show how important it is that we continue to invest billions of pounds in the water network every year. Without the massive investment that private water companies are able to provide, the big environmental improvements we have seen over the last thirty years would be in danger of being lost.”
