UK bathing water quality
The latest results for compliance to the European Bathing Water Directive by UK coastal and inland bathing waters show that:
• 95.4% of UK bathing waters met the minimum standard - that is 595 out of 624 bathing waters
• 60% of bathing waters met the Directive’s excellent standard

Visitors to England’s seaside and bathing waters will be able to enjoy cleaner water than ever before, thanks to improvements made over the past two decades. Bathing water quality, tested at 413 beaches and lakes across the country, is the best on record with 98.5% passing tough standards this year.

Stricter standards for bathing waters
The UK bathing season starts this month and runs until the end of September. For 2014, monitoring data will be assessed using the standards set in the current bathing water directive. This is the last season these standards will be used. From 2015, bathing water quality will be assessed using new, stricter standards.
