Challenges in adapting to climate change

Water UK set out for MPs some of the water industry's key challenges in adapting to climate change.

Sarah Mukherjee, Water UK Director of Environment, recently told the Enviromental Audit Committee that the main challenges are:

  • storage and the best ways of catching rainwater while we can, particularly because of the cycle of floods and droughts that we have seen in recent years
  • a resilient sewer network that can also cope with the more extreme weather patterns that we are now seeing
  • making best use of taxpayers' and water customers' money to secure the best outcomes in relation to the Water Framework Directive and other EU legislation
  • bringing down leakage even further and also helping customers to save water.

The Committee is currently carrying out an inquiry into actions being taken by government, business and society to become more climate-ready.
