Water in a Net Zero World
A sector unites on the Race to Zero
Introduction to the Race to Zero
With global water utilities responsible for almost 2% of greenhouse gas emissions, it has never been more important for our industry to transform its approach to water and wastewater services.

Water UK is proud to be official partner to the Race to Zero campaign. Led by the UN’s High-Level Climate Champions for Climate Action, the Race to Zero is a global campaign, rallying non-state actors – including companies, cities, regions, financial, educational, and healthcare institutions – to take rigorous and immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero carbon world in time.

The Race to Zero is an umbrella campaign – driven by science – that aggregates net zero commitments from a range of leading networks and initiatives across the climate action community.
At Water UK, we’ve been working with our members to develop a detailed plan to get the UK industry to net zero and are committed to sharing our experience and helping to build best practice on one of the biggest challenges facing the sector.
As part of this, we are delighted to be working with a number of international partners including the International Water Association and the US Water Alliance – both of which share our vision of delivering a net zero water service for the world’s homes and businesses.
