National guidance for wastewater discharges from hospitals (April 2011)

Healthcare organisations undertake a number of activities that can result in the discharge of various items and substances to sewerage systems. This guidance is issued by Water UK to clarify requirements for those wastewater discharges.

Best practice guidance is given to ensure the most efficient use of water within healthcare sites and to prevent pollution of the UK’s sewerage systems.

The document has been designed to be user friendly. Each standalone section refers to an area, function or department so is easy to access. A traffic light system has been used with green (go ahead), amber (caution: discuss with your sewerage undertaker) and red (discharge to sewer prohibited). It also contains references for further information.
