Suffolk care home wins best hydration prize

02/10/08

The Martins in Bury St Edmunds has won the first nationwide competition to find the care home with the best hydration practice.

Supported by Water UK and organised by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and National Association of Care Catering (NACC), the competition rewards the individual or team who most improves the provision of drinking water and enhances safety for older people in residential care.

The Martins care home was originally a pilot study site for Anglian Water’s successful Health on Tap, the campaign aimed at improving health in older people by drinking water from the tap.

With the total cooperation of Care Home Manager Wendy Tomlinson, who is also a registered nurse, Anglian Water provided support to set up a weekly Drinking Water Club. Resident members were asked to keep water diaries. The benefits recorded by the residents and witnessed by The Martins’ staff is testament to the widely held belief that water is the best health drink around!

Well done, The Martins and Anglian Water for their bold initiative.
