Salford Royal Scoops Best Hydration Practice Award

02/05/08

Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust is the proud winner of this year’s Patient Safety Hydration Best Practice award.

The award recognises the outstanding contribution of an individual or team to improving the provision and safety of drinking water to patients on hospital wards. Criteria include the provision of chilled water 24 hours-a-day. The water has to be offered regularly with enthusiasm and at its most palatable condition. In addition, hospitals are required to conduct a water audit, review existing facilities, develop local training, and work collaboratively with nurses to improve hydration.

The judges included Caroline Lecko, National Patient Safety Agency, Debbie Dzik-Jurasz, Royal College of Nursing, Neil Watson-Jones Hospital Caterers Association and Water UK’s Irene Hamilton. They assessed the enthusiastic applications from hospitals all over the country and were impressed by their innovative ideas. Caroline Lecko handed over a cheque for £500 and the trophy – a crystal Water UK water jug engraved with the winner’s name - to Sonia Brine, Salford’s Hotel Services Manager, at the Hospital Caterers Association dinner at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel.
