What are RSS news feeds?

RSS news feeds allow you to receive information direct to your computer or mobile device from a website, so you can read news as it happens. You can get the latest headlines and stories without visiting the website.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

All the latest Water UK news and policy is now available via the Water UK RSS feed.

You can subscribe to the Water UK news feed wherever you see this orange RSS button on the website.

What do I need?

It's very easy to subscribe, but you do need a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the web source for the latest feed and displays it on your screen. You decide when and how you read this news.

There are two basic types of news reader:

1 Those that use an internet browser
2 Applications you can download and install

The difference between them is similar to the two ways you can choose to get your email. For example, Google Mail is browser-based and lets you read your emails from wherever you access the internet. Outlook is an application you install and manage yourself. It downloads your emails onto your computer.

Once you have a news reader, you can sign up to the Water UK news feed by clicking on the orange RSS button.

This will take you to a page called Water UK RSS Feed. From here you can subscribe to the feed using your chosen software or sign up to a browser-based service – the Subscribe page tells you how to do this.

How do I get a news reader?

1. Browser-based readers

Some internet browsers (e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 and Apple's Safari) have built-in readers. If you are running one of these, you can subscribe to RSS feeds immediately and read the news within your browser.

If you are not running a browser that has RSS built in, the easiest way to subscribe is through one of the browser-based readers offered on the Water UK Subscribe page. The list includes: Google, Yahoo, MyAOL, Newsgator, Rojo, Bloglines, Netvibes and Pageflakes.

If you have an email account with any of these services, we recommend you choose that one. Otherwise you can sign up by following the instructions on the Subscribe page.

If you run the browser Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or earlier you will need to sign up to a browser-based RSS reader as IE6 does not work with the orange RSS button.

2. Downloadable applications

Alternatively you may wish to use a news reader application. There are quite a number of different readers available and new versions are appearing all the time.

Some of these readers are listed on the right hand column of this page, with links so you can explore more for yourself.

Different news reader applications work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that works with your system and your computer setup.

If your computer is networked within an organisation, check with the network administrator before attempting to download any software.
