ultraviolet (UV) treatment
Treatment of drinking water or effluent with UV rays to neutralise bacteria.

unit costs
The total cost divided by a measure of output; usually volume of water delivered or sewage taken away.

United Kingdom Water Industry Research (UKWIR)
An organisation set up by the UK water industry in 1993 to deliver a common research programme for UK water operators on 'one voice' issues.

upper tier limit
An absolute numerical limit in a consent to discharge.
