Among the many misunderstandings related to the so-called Priority Substances Directive, now in its second reading in the European Parliament, two are pertinent.
First, this WFD Daughter Directive will only contribute to achieving the objectives of the Water Framework Directive.
Second, it is important to ensure that within the directive, mixing zones are secured. Water UK considers this provision essential for success. Mixing zones are a temporary technical measure to help achieve compliance with environmental quality standards when two streams of different quality mix. This is not a “right to pollute” and will never be so.
