CAP must fit for water management

29/01/08

Challenges linked to implementation of the Water Framework Directive require an agenda shared between all sectors.

The European Commission's public consultation on the Communication to prepare for a 'Health Check' of the Common Agricultural Policy contributes to the discussions on priorities and actions in farming and related sectors.

The Communication sets out water management as a key challenge, but current discussions focus on issues vital for the agricultural sector, such as the phasing out of dairy quotas and more generally the financial impacts of any reform on the sector.

Water UK is calling for an improved consideration of the challenges linked to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Delivery of WFD objectives should be based on a collective agenda shared by all sectors concerned.
