Water Framework Directive - protecting drinking water catchments under Article 7

13/01/05

Water UK has welcomed the principles embodied in the Water Framework Directive, and is very willing to work with the government, regulators and other organisations to offer practical advice on its implementation

The Directive has many important objectives, but we regard Article 7 and Annex 4, which relate to designation and setting improvement targets for protected areas for drinking water catchments as particularly important. This is both in terms of meeting one of the key goals of the Directive, but also to ensure the best possible quality of raw water is available for the production of safe and clean drinking water for our customers.

We believe however that unlike many other aspects of the Directive, this topic has not hitherto had the focus that it requires. The Source Protection Zones need to be designated very soon and this note therefore sets out the water industry views on how that process can be most effectively completed.

Thereafter it will be important to have ongoing dialogue with regulators on how specific targets for raw drinking water quality can be derived and incorporated in the required Programme of Measures.
