The Water Framework Directive is the single most important piece of water legislation. It is a mechanism to drive and achieve sustainable water resources in Europe, to manage and control impacts at source and to collaborate for the long term. 
About the directiveThe Water Framework Directive requires all inland and coastal waters to reach ‘good chemical and ecological status’ for surface waters and ‘good status’ for groundwater in terms of quality and quantity by 2015.
