Phosphates in detergents - Water UK response

02/05/08

Water UK responds to Defra's consultation on controls on phosphates in domestic laundry cleaning products in England.

The response supports the principles of 'pollution control at source' and to provide a clear signal to industry to plan for sustainable alternatives to using phosphates.

Water UK believes:

 • voluntary controls will not be effective and only a regulatory approach can control phosphate levels

 • small manufacturers should not be exempt

 • the source control policy should be extended to cover dishwasher detergents; and

 • phosphate control should be at a national level.
