Response to EA's draft standard rules for the Environmental Permitting Regulations

26/11/09

Water UK has responded to the Environment Agency's draft standard rules SR2010No3 - discharge to surface water: secondary treated domestic sewage with a maximum daily volume between 5 and 20 cubic metres per day.

Water UK welcomes the extension of the standard permitting approach into the small sewage treatment works sector, but has concerns about how widely the draft rules could be used in their current format, since they contain several significant restrictions to widespread application.

It is a concern that standard permits could not be used for activities carried out within 1 km of EU sites/SSSIs as this will significantly reduce their use.
