Companies consult on long-term plans

04/04/08

In April water companies in England and Wales publish for consultation water resource management plans for 2010 to 2035.

The detailed plans have been prepared with the support of the government, the Environment Agency and Ofwat. They will set out how demand for water is expected to change over the next 25 years and measures to ensure there is enough water for customers and the environment.

The plans will include companies’ assessments of the most cost-effective range of options for a secure supply-demand balance: generally a combination of increased metering, leakage management, demand management measures and investment in new or additional sources of water where appropriate.

In the UK we are fortunate in having a well-established water planning framework and secure public water supply. The forthcoming consultation will give everyone the opportunity to scrutinise this framework so we can identify the best means to secure achievable, affordable and sustainable supplies.
