Sustainability in the water industry

Water UK briefing & water company CSR reports

Sustainability

Water UK's long-term vision is for a sustainable water industry. This will be achieved through efficient provision of water and wastewater services and a commitment to:

 •  Protect and promote public health
 •  Provide a high quality, reliable and value-for-money service
 •  Respond to climate change
 •  Reduce impacts on the environment
 •  Earn the trust of the community

In December 2007 water companies set out their approaches to sustainability in Strategic Direction Statements.

Water UK reports on progress and set out the challenges all those in the sector need to work together to address in its sustainability reports.

In 2008 Water UK also published Sustainable Water: State of the Sector Report, the first report of its kind. It addresses the question: is the sector becoming more sustainable? There is, of course, no simple answer, but in examining this question, the report identifies what has been driving success over the past five years.

It also identifies barriers or challenges that will help water companies, policy makers and others set priorities for the future.

The reports demonstrate the industry’s commitment to continued high-quality provision of its essential services in a sustainable way, recognising and addressing the important role the industry has in areas related to the environment, communities and society in general.
