Climate Change White Paper
15/07/09
Press release: Water UK supports today's publication by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) of a national strategy for climate and energy. The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan plots out how the UK will meet the cut in emissions set out in the budget.
The White Paper sets out the government's vision of a future that is fair, low-carbon, prosperous and energy secure, and details the policies it proposes to get us there.
It was published alongside three other policy publications: The Low Carbon Industrial Strategy, The UK Renewable Energy Strategy and Low Carbon Transport - A Greener Future.
The government has a five point plan to tackle climate change:
1. Protecting the public from immediate risk
2. Preparing for the future
3. Limiting the severity of future climate change through a new climate change agreement
4. Building a low carbon UK
5. Supporting individuals, communities and businesses to play their part.
Water industry is on the front line of climate change as its raw material is directly dependent on the natural environment. Not surprisingly the water companies have been planning and taking actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change for many years.
Expected impacts are embedded in long-term plans for providing both clean water and waste water services. By understanding their energy consumption and through carbon management they are leaving no stone unturned in seeking to reduce their contribution to climate change.
