World Water Week 2008

15/08/08

World Water Week beginning in Stockholm Sunday 17 August is to focus on sanitation. Its theme is "progress and prospects in the efforts to build a clean and healthy world".

Noting the world's slow progress towards the Millennium Development Goal on poverty which recognises the plight of 2.6 billion people lacking adequate sanitation, Water UK applauds the organisers' decision.

In addition to the special focus, other topics include agriculture, biodiversity, climate change, drinking water, economics, ecosystems, finance, governance, pollution, poverty reduction, stakeholder involvement, technology and water resource management.

Several specific themes will be explored through seminars and workshops and attention will also be given to outstanding efforts and raised awareness of different water and development issues.

The work will build upon the legacy of meetings held annually in Stockholm.
