US research shows that drinking water helps keep down the calorie count.
It is hardly the most earth-shattering revelation of this funny summer, but news that water before meals can play a part in weight loss is a timely reminder of one of its many health benefits.
Resarchers at Virginia University found that dieters lost more weight if they took a cool zero-calorie aperitif before their fruit, vegetable and wholegrain meals.
The news goes with the grain of healthy lifestyles in more ways than one. What works for dieters works for everyone up to a point as many studies have shown. And it helps that it's kind of intuitive - maybe you feel a little fuller and consequently eat a little less.
Professor Davy at Virginia sees no reason to complicate things: "People should drink more water and less sugary high-calorie drinks. It is a simple way to facilitate weight management."
In the UK, water companies have worked with health authorities and nutrition experts for many years to underline the value of drinking water. Many more people are now aware that taking sufficient fluid is important; and that water has more advantages than most from a purely health perspective.
