Water UK Sustainability Indicators 2008-09, published today, measures water companies' work for customers, society and the environment now and in the future.
There has been significant progress in areas that are high priority for customers but also contribute to long-term security of supply and service delivery:
• continuing high levels of drinking water quality
• fewer interruptions to supply and low pressure problems
• lower risk of sewer flooding
• leakage continues to fall
• growth in use of renewable energy.
Just as important for future reliability are improvements in meeting environmental obligations, especially protecting biodiversity and natural resources and recycling.
But there is still work to do. Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are increasing, driven largely by obligations to pump and treat more water to ever higher standards. The industry's health and safety record needs to improve.
Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive, said:
"This report highlights progress to be proud of, notably a 40% increase in use of renewable energy. It shows companies recognising the critical role they play in sustainable communities looking after the environment and providing high-quality service.
"The indicators are also valuable in pointing to where we must do more. Water companies can't deliver sustainability on their own in the face of challenges such as population growth, climate change and questions about affordability. They need support from regulators, policy makers, customers and users to go on investing and building on the progress of recent years. All these groups have a part to play in a truly sustainable water industry."

Notes
• The indicators provide detail about the industry as a whole, and (in some areas) specific information about companies. For each indicator, information is provided on why it is included, what the information tells us (including comparisons with previous years where appropriate), and the main issues related to performance. Examples of individual company action are also included.
• The information has been provided by all twenty three of Water UK’s member companies, which are the statutory water and wastewater service providers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
