Royal project shows how being more waterwise rewards people and nature.
Prince Charles launched the START initiative earlier this year with the primary purpose of accentuating the positive in sustainable lifestyles.
As a reaction to the common idea that tackling climate change, for example, must mean stopping doing things, the Prince is surely on to something. And while his "Snub the tub" message* may not be quite consistent, it's a catchy way of putting not-very-exciting water efficiency on the agenda.
All UK water companies promote the benefits of using water efficiently as one part of their strategy to provide a good balance between supply and demand. The Waterwise 2010 Review 'Water efficiency and the water companies' (pdf) shows the value of individual company and collective initiatives.
This activity covers a mass of projects and events ranging from education campaigns to roadshows, bargain water butts and audits of water use. At every stage, the positive benefits are highlighted - this is about potentially saving money but equally about helping wildlife habitats and species, especially in dry areas.
The water industry supports the Start programme as a way of raising awareness of water efficiency and all the benefits of sustainable living. Next month Water UK will take part in the Start Summit. The 9-day event, sponsored by IBM, a Water UK Partner, will cover ways to a sustainable future in cities, energy, transport, skills, business and finance. All, we can be certain, from a very positive perspective.
