Should I worry about water?

01/10/04

An emphatic primetime "No!" is good news for everyone.

The BBC's investigative current affairs show 'Should I worry about...' last night (30 September) took on drinking water and got a result. The producers and their bouncy presenter Richard Hammond won well for everyone who wants to look after themselves, whatever their budget.

Working through a series of tough questions, the programme dealt with many of the doubts people have about their intake of water. It delivered the kind of fudge-free answers we'd like to see more when health issues are debated.

Those questions....and answers

 •  Should I worry about tap water? No, it's fine throughout the country.

 •  Do I need to filter tap water? No, keep it in the fridge and any chlorine taste will disappear.

 •  Is bottled water worth the money? No, unless you want to pretend you're Madonna.

 •  Do I need to drink 2 litres of water a day? No, but you do need to drink enough water.

 •  Will our enthusiastic telegenic presenter and his family be drinking tap water at home from now on? You betcha.

The UK water industry has invested billions in drinking water quality in recent years. Our tap water, costing around one tenth of one penny a litre, is among the best in the world.

How refreshing to see the value of this national asset given a positive primetime airing.
