Britain's beaches deserve their quality awards

06/08/10

Today's criticism of some of Britain's favourite bathing beaches by a single interest group is disappointing and damaging.

Many of Britain's favourite bathing beaches are recognised for the quality of their facilities and bathing water by the award of Blue Flags. These awards are made to beaches that meet standards used in over 40 countries.

Winning a Blue Flag requires the hard work and cooperation of many partners, including councils, the Environment Agency and water companies, who are determined to provide holiday-makers and local people with the best possible beach environment.

Water companies have played a vital role in achieving higher standards at hundreds of bathing beaches in recent years. This work continues with major investment - over £1000m in the next five years - in improving legacy combined sewers and storm overflows.

Alarmist criticism based on interpretation of a single award criterion and apparently lacking substantiating evidence is unjustified and damaging to the communities concerned.
