Water industry sustainability - latest indicators

05/01/12

The water industry's annual report of sustainability against a range of indicators is published today.

The report - Sustainability Indicators 2010/11 - highlights good progress in a number of areas. Drinking water quality is higher than ever, leakage is down and the amount of renewable energy produced by the industry has increased significantly.

A total of 17 indicators report progress within five priority areas: public health, value for money, response to climate change, reducing environmental impacts, and earning the trust of the communities we serve.

The industry accepts that there is more to do. A harsh winter last year led to problems with burst pipes and service interruptions, and pollution incidents led to more convictions for companies than in previous years. We must continue to invest in an ageing infrastructure to reduce the risk of these and other failures happening in future.
