Why water matters

Water UK welcomes the report and congratulates the Trust on its approach to some important but tough questions about a most precious resource. These include:

 • the best and most sustainable way to tackle diffuse pollution, which has significant impacts on environmental and drinking water quality;
 • how to reduce the risk of flooding, for example through improved drainage and stormwater management;
 • how to promote the more efficient use of water;
 • ways to enhance the natural aquatic environment and protect biodiversity;
 • creating and restoring wetlands; and
 • planning for and managing climate change.

The report recognises that the Trust has an important role in managing water sustainably across its own properties and estates. It also acknowledges its role in communicating and demonstrating good practice.

Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive said:

"Water UK supports the Trust's decision to take a leading role in promoting the need for integrated land use planning and management of catchments. As one of the most respected conservation and environmental groups the Trust is well placed to improve everyone's awareness of the water environment."

Water UK looks forward to working with the Trust and other stakeholders to ensure that the forthcoming Floods and Water Bill provides an opportunity to clarify roles and responsibilities for funding and water management.

More incentives are needed for agricultural environment schemes, as well as better linkages with biodiversity, climate change and water quality schemes.
