Watchdog's good news for water customers

16/07/10

In 2009 people in England and Wales enjoyed high quality and increased confidence in their drinking water, the independent quality regulator says.

The annual report of the Drinking Water Inspectorate, released this month, shows that of 2 million tests, measuring 39 parameters, 99.95% reached stringent EU quality standards.

In her letter to the water minister, the Chief Inspector writes of a "positive improving trend in public confidence in drinking water quality as measured by consumers". In the past 3 years, the number contacting their water company about drinking water quality fell by more than a quarter to 1.1 per 1000.

In particular, targeted new investment, together with better operational and maintenance strategies, has led to a significant reduction in the number of consumers reporting discoloured water.

The industry does however face challenges in meeting European drinking water standards.

In 2013 the required standard for lead in drinking water falls from 25 ug/l to 10 ug/l (micrograms per litre). Companies have been working towards this for several years and are making progress, but challenges remain and they are working with water and health regulators on the most effective solutions.

Pesticides are also a problem. The best solution is to stop pesticides entering water sources in the first place. To achieve this, companies are working with farmers and others on catchment management strategies which are more sustainable than ever more intensive treatment processes. Effective treatment will always be needed, but early indications are that these approaches are showing benefits.
