Water UK welcomes the first policy statement on climate change published today by the economic regulator in England and Wales, Ofwat.
The impacts of climate change will be felt first and most acutely through water. Water companies are well aware of these impacts, many of which are already affecting the services provided by the industry.
That is why they have been working to embed the effects into long-term planning for many years, based on the best available evidence and a wealth of research. The industry has also long recognised its responsibility to measure, report and manage its own emissions to reduce its contribution to dangerous climate change.
Regulators and policy makers have a key role to play in enabling water companies to meet these challenges. We are therefore pleased that Ofwat has recognised these issues, including:
• The need for the industry to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions.
• The wider role that the whole water sector has to play - in addressing diffuse pollution or influencing water efficiency for example.
• The need to address tension between climate change mitigation and local water quality.
• The need to improve reslience across the sector so vital services are protected from extreme weather events.
• Clear links between mitigation and adaptation.
• A risk-based approach that delivers the greatest overall value for customers and the environment.
The challenge for companies and regulators alike is to ensure that the right policies and words are translated into action.
