Water UK strengthens policy team

19/07/10

The water industry association has appointed two directors to lead policy development in core areas of water business.

This month, Sarah Mukherjee joins as Director of Environment from the BBC, where she was environment correspondent. In September, James Bullock becomes Director of Economic Regulation and Market Reform, joining from Ofcom where he was Director in the Competition Group.

Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive, said:

"James and Sarah join us at a time when Water UK has to be even more focused on delivering the changes the industry needs. They bring experience and great track records in environmental and economic regulation policy. I’m delighted they are joining the team here.

"The time is right to bring in two such big-hitters. The sector has just concluded a round of price reviews. The challenges we face - climate change, incentive and market reform, ensuring sustainable access to the markets - are very different from the past.

"The next reviews will begin soon enough, but right now we have an opportunity to make changes that will equip the companies to build on success for the long-term good of customers and the environment. Sarah and James bring the fresh ideas and talent we need to make the difference."

Sarah Mukherjee

Sarah has been a specialist environmental journalist for more than a decade covering all aspects of environmental policy for BBC radio, TV and online. During that time she won many awards and was responsible for several world exclusives including a first interview with the Prince of Wales. Sarah has covered water issues in detail, including flooding, drought, water scarcity, conservation, biodiversity, long-term water resources planning and infrastructure. She was educated at Oxford University where she read Law. Sarah worked at the House of Commons in advisory and communication roles before gaining a diploma in journalism.

Sarah said:

"I'm delighted to be joining Water UK in such an interesting and demanding role. Water companies are well aware of the environmental challenges that face them. I relish the chance to help create policy on the big issues for the future."

James Bullock

James spent the last six years at Ofcom working on competition and strategic issues in the UK telecoms and media sectors. Prior to this, he spent four years as an equity analyst at ABN AMRO Investment Bank with a focus on pan-European media companies. James trained as a Chartered Accountant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He has a Cambridge University degree in economics and is an alum of UCLA and London Business School, where he studied for his MBA.

James said:

"I'm very pleased to be joining Water UK at this crucial moment for the water industry. How we develop policy in the next few years could influence water services and the water environment for decades ahead. I look forward to working with management, policy makers and regulators to build a sustainable future for the industry."
