Water prices in England and Wales 2009-10

18/02/09

New price limits and charges approved by the water regulator Ofwat take effect in April.

A continuing need for investment and higher costs mean average water bills rising by around 1.1% above inflation.

At the last water price review in 2004, Ofwat set price limits for each company for each of the five years year from 2005 to 2010. Prices for 2009-10 are set according to a formula that combines existing prices with an additional charge allowed by the new price limit and a charge covering inflation measured by the Retail Price Index in November (on this occasion 3.0%).

Pamela Taylor, Water UK Chief Executive, said:

"Customers have told us that their top priorities are a reliable supply of high quality drinking water, and an efficient sewerage service.

"The new charges will enable companies to continue to invest in a secure supply of high quality drinking water and environmental improvements in spite of the credit crunch."

Referring to the achievements of water companies in the current five-year price review period, Ofwat highlights leakage reduced by 35%, 20,000 kilometers of water main replaced or renewed, and the return of salmon to the River Mersey.
