Water services in England and Wales: a decade of delivery
by Barrie Clarke | Shared x 0Looking back on the first decade of the millennium, the water industry can reflect on steady progress and hard lessons.
The lessons came in managing a deep cut in revenue, public criticism, serious drought and devastating floods. The progress is evident in standards held consistently high and improvements in important measures.
Both have also contributed to a strong platform for the new decade.
The industry provides essential services to the economy and society, so this strength should be welcomed by customers as well as stakeholders and regulators. It matters because companies must deliver major capital investment, hold down costs and meet demanding standards in an economy emerging from recession.
Tough decisions will be needed, but the industry relishes the challenge and may fairly base its prospects on a record of consistently improving service to present and future customers.
