With cold weather once again upon us, it's easy to forget the hot, dry days of last spring. And yet that exceptionally warm period of low rainfall is still having an effect on the country's water resources.
Some parts of the country have had plenty of rain in recent months, others have had very little. December did bring some rainy days, but in some places it was not enough to help our dried-out soils to recover completely - and while the soil is still dry, the water does not percolate down to recharge groundwater supplies.
Only a sustained period of substantial rainfall will remove altogether the possibility of water restrictions later in the year.
The industry is working, as it always does, at an operational and strategic level, to ensure that it's doing all it can to manage our precious water supplies.
