Low rainfall in parts of the country has raised questions about water supply and demand management.
Water companies are required to prepare 25-year water resource management plans. They consult customers, local organisations, consumer and environmental interests about their needs and about investment in improved levels of service. The plans must be approved by government before publication and are regularly reviewed during implementation.
Companies also prepare drought plans in consultation with government environment agencies. These plans cover the sequence of actions the companies will take to secure supplies when long periods of low rainfall reduce the volume of water available for use. In some situations, drought plans require temporary restrictions on some discretionary uses of water.
