The launch of the Environment Agency’s national water resources strategy is the culmination of many months work and widespread consultation. It raises important and challenging questions.
Principally, the EA strategy addresses how water is valued and how resources should be managed over the coming decades so that water can be abstracted and used in a sustainable manner, in the face of increasing pressure and uncertainty.
Over the next few months, water resource management plans will be approved and published. These set out how water companies will plan for and manage growth, climate change, reduced water availability and much more.
Ultimately the success of both strategy and plans will depend on their moving in the same direction and being consistent with 'Future Water', the government’s long-term vision.
