Water UK has produced a briefing to explain the measures water companies can take when dry weather could affect resources.
Behind the scenes, companies are monitoring with precision the balance between the water available for supply, patterns of water use by customers, projected rainfall forecasts and the potential for sharing water across different parts of their regional network.
Companies regularly talk to the Environment Agency about what this may mean for water supplies in the weeks and months to come, and agreement is reached on when, and if, these will trigger a drought permit application.
