With no imminent drought, all companies bettering their targets and levels around 35% lower than 10 years ago, its not surprising that leakage is out of the headlines.
But the Water UK 2009 leakage conference last month showed that the industry is not complacent. Efficient and sustainable companies should be operating at the economic level of leakage.
Politicians, customers and environmental groups expect leakage to fall over time, and with increased water scarcity this may be the case in many areas. But a tough regulatory settlement will make the improvements in networks necessary to deliver this difficult.
The silver lining may be the drive to innovate generated by these conflicting pressures. Those working on leakage will be working harder than ever on detection, repairs and the 'holy grail' of leak-free networks.
