Water companies have been reporting at least a two- or three-fold increase in leakage activity compared to a normal winter. However, companies were geared up to ensure there was no significant impact on service.
Winter is the peak season for leakage, as the (largely iron) pipes are subjected to extreme soil temperature variations, including freezing and rapid thaw.
This year’s cold snap, the worst for several decades, has brought particular problems for householders and water companies alike.
Despite the additional efforts, whether all companies meet leakage targets this year will depend on weather conditions for the remainder of the winter.
