Election promises for water efficiency

29/04/10

With the general election on countdown, the main parties continue to recognise the importance of prioritising investment in infrastructure while tackling climate change and promoting water efficiency.

Water UK notes that the manifestos highlight water resources issues and support metering and other measures for demand management.

Labour: "In stimulating the sustainable use of resources, we will [continue] the move towards universal water metering in areas of water stress."

Conservatives: "With a rising population and growing strains on our water supply, industry and customers alike need new incentives to conserve water. We will reform the water industry, and bring in new measures to encourage businesses and households to value this precious resource more highly, and protect poorer households from excessive rises in water bills."

Liberal Democrats: "We will… crack down on waste from the water companies and introduce compulsory smart meters in areas of shortage."

For a focused debate on metering and the opportunity to contribute your own thinking in detailed discussions on resources, join experts from across the water industry on 20 May at the 2010 Water UK Metering Symposium.
