Water UK is seeking increased protection of drinking water abstraction sources in planned EU legislation.
The European Parliament is currently scrutinising the proposed directive on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides.
The directive is important to the water industry as one of the main instruments for achieving the objectives of the water framework directive.
One of the provisions concerns specific measures to protect the aquatic environment. Water UK supports this and would like to see measures in addition to buffer zones (areas in which pesticides may not be spread). In particular, the industry is arguing for further protection of areas intended for drinking water abstraction.
Encouragingly, MEPs are also sympathetic to this greater emphasis on drinking water resources.
