Water treatment schemes for redundant coal mines demonstrate the importance of multi-sector involvement in water quality improvement and protection of our water environment.
The Coal Authority is operating 56 mine water treatment schemes throughout the UK, protecting 320 kilometres of water courses and preventing contamination of valuable drinking water supplies. By 2027 the Authority is intending to build a further 64 schemes, towards meeting requirements of the European Water Framework Directive.
We welcome this programme, together with proposals in the government's Energy Bill which would increase the powers of the Authority to enable it to assist with treating discharges from non-coal mines.
