Sewer and drain misconnections from many thousands of domestic properties are an important source of urban diffuse pollution in the UK. A national campaign, to be launched in February, aims to address the problem.
Developed through a strategic partnership between the Environment Agency, Water UK, water companies and others, the Connect Right campaign will raise awareness of the two types of misconnections and the associated environmental issues.
Mistakes in plumbing and building can either add foul sewage to the surface water drains that discharge to watercourses or cause overloading of foul sewers with surface run-off waters, resulting in increased overflows.
Connect Right aims to deliver best practice guidance for water companies and support a range of key stakeholders, including plumbers, builders, housing associations and building and plumbing merchants. It will also seek to identify areas where regulation might be needed.
