Government moves on affordability for community groups

30/09/09

Following an announcement by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, community groups may not face sudden large increases in charges for surface water drainage.

The Minister intends that the forthcoming Flood and Water Management Bill should give water companies in England and Wales the power to charge scout groups, faith groups, village halls, amateur sports clubs and other community groups a concessionary rate for surface water drainage.

As non-domestic customers, many community groups would otherwise face increased bills for surface water drainage, determined according to the area of their property.

Water UK will work with all interested parties to ensure that detailed implementation of the proposals secures maximum benefit at the least cost to other customers who will pay the cost of the concessions granted to community organisations.

Water UK is pleased that government intentions through legislation can be reflected in Ofwat's regulation of water companies.
