In the UK, our wastewater network protects our health and quality of life, but those same sewers and drains depend on us to keep working properly. A new water industry campaign is raising awareness of the need to prevent sewer misuse.
SNAP, the Sewer Network Action Programme, aims to stop sewer blockages that result from our drains and toilets being used as waste bins for food, fats, oil and solid items, and to protect our environment from plumbing misconnections.
The SNAP web resource is a reference point for existing energetic campaigns by water companies and partner groups to raise awareness and change behaviours in waste management in four areas:
• fats, oils and grease
• non-flushable products
• macerators (food disposal units)
• misconnections (wastewater draining to surface water sewers).
