The European Court of Justice has dismissed the sensitive areas case brought by the European Commission against the UK government on failure to designate a number of sites as sensitive areas under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
The areas concerned were:
• Humber estuary
• The Wash
• Deben estuary
• Colne estuary
• Outer Thames estuary
• Southampton Water
• North East Irish Sea (excluding the Solway Firth)
The Court ordered the European Commission to pay the costs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
