World Water Day earlier this month again reinforced the longstanding commitment throughout the sector to help transform the lives of millions of people in Africa and Asia who lack clean water and basic sanitation.
Each year World Water Day triggers a fresh wave of activity among water companies, their employers and suppliers to raise funds for the international charity WaterAid. Efforts last year are expected to have raised around £4.3 million.
WaterAid really is the industry’s ‘own’ charity, established in 1981 with £25,000 raised by water company employees.
Support now extends far beyond the industry, as individuals and water companies have become advocates for WaterAid within their own communities and among their corporate partners.
On a recent trip to Mali Water UK Chief Executive Pamela Taylor, a Trustee of WaterAid, witnessed first hand what this effort is achieving on the ground: "Every well and every latrine makes such a difference to people’s lives that it’s worth it.”
