Anaerobic digestion – how the industry will help

30/07/08

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success” (Henry Ford, US car manufacturer). This is a fair summary of the challenge laid down by ministers for anaerobic digestion.

The water industry has used the technology for many years to extract valuable energy from the sewage treatment process. But the broader range of benefits can only be obtained by working together to co-digest sewage with biodegradable material from other sectors.

As well as generating renewable energy, anaerobic digestion diverts organic waste from landfill, reduces methane emissions from waste and is a valuable source of fertiliser.

The water industry will be actively engaging with other sectors to remove the barriers that exist and build on the water industry’s existing infrastructure, experience and expertise in support of the government’s vision.
