It is a tribute to all those involved – regulators, ministers, landowners, NGOs, water companies and others – that more than 100 catchment management schemes will be investigated or delivered during 2010-15.
These days it is easy enough to talk about the need to be sustainable. Harder is putting sustainability into practice.
Getting here has been a struggle. But we now have a collective opportunity to work in new and unexplored ways during the next (AMP5) investment period.
It will not be easy. For the next five years and beyond, we need ongoing commitment, trust, funding and innovation if we are to implement, measure and ensure success. The benefits may be uncertain, but the costs of not building on the good work to date will surely be greater.
