Progress on sewers transfer

28/04/11

The regulations relating to the government transfer of private sewers to water and wastewater companies have now been laid before Parliament, representing a major milestone towards simplifying the ownership structure of our vital national infrastructure.

Following Parliamentary scrutiny, the regulations will come into effect on 1 July 2011 and the transfer will take place as of 1 October 2011.

In parallel with the legislative process, the industry has been busy with a range of preparatory activities to enable the smooth transfer to water and sewerage companies of these assets.

Water companies are communicating with customers about the change of ownership and company lawyers continue to work on the form of legal notice to give effect to the impending transfer.

Discussions are also proceeding with the house-building industry about more detailed aspects of the transfer as they relate to standards for new properties.
