Private sewers transfer begins

30/09/11

As of 1 October, water and sewerage companies take over responsibility for more than 200,000 kilometres of private sewers in England and Wales. Water UK has produced guidance to supplement the information produced by Defra.

Companies have been working closely with insurers, local authorities, housing associations, large landowners, drainage contractors and others to ensure that this transfer is as smooth as possible. In addition, they have written to their customers, explaining what the transfer will mean for householders.

The Water UK guidance focuses on ‘curtilage’, a key issue in deciding which lateral drains and sewers transfer to the water and sewerage companies. The document includes images that illustrate scenarios affecting different types of properties, from caravan parks to railway lines.
